The inaugural UAB Marchase Interdisciplinary Research Centers Symposium will meet Friday, Aug. 17, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium.
The symposium celebrates interdisciplinary research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Keynote speaker is Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, talking on “Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases: From AIDS to Zika.” Fauci oversees an extensive research program for infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, influenza, tuberculosis, Ebola, and Zika, as well as diseases of the immune system. He serves as a key adviser to both the White House and the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services on global infectious disease issues.
UAB speakers will be Robert Kimberly, M.D., Steven Rowe, M.D., MSPH, Michael Saag, M.D., and Yogesh Vohra, Ph.D. At UAB, Kimberly is director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences, Rowe is director of the Gregory Fleming James Cystic Fibrosis Research Center, Saag is director of the Center for AIDS Research, and Vohra is director of the Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration.
Saag will also receive the first annual Marchase Award, named in honor of Richard B. Marchase, Ph.D., former UAB vice president for Research and Economic Development. The Marchase Award honors a UAB investigator who leads or promotes interdisciplinary research on campus in the spirit of camaraderie that Marchase personifies.
The symposium also will feature a discussion of interdisciplinary research at UAB and the roles of the UAB University-wide Interdisciplinary Research Centers, and posters that highlight interdisciplinary research through the 24 UAB interdisciplinary centers.
