Assistant Professor of Printmaking Derek CraccoVisit artists in their studios and participate in hands-on artmaking demonstrations Friday, April 6, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s 2300 Studios.
Art Studio faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History will open their studios to share their visual research and give demonstrations to guests. Visitors will be able to see a wide range of artmaking processes, including screen printing, sculptural mold-making, Japanese natural dyeing and 19th-century wet-plate collodion photography. Complimentary pizza and refreshments will be available.
The event will take place from 2-5 p.m. at 2300 Seventh Ave. South. Open Studios is free and open to the public. Limited free parking will be available; additional metered parking is available on the street.
“The Open Studios event is designed to highlight the breadth and depth of our studio faculty’s research with a behind-the-scenes look into the spaces where our faculty make their artwork,” said UAB DAAH Interim Chair Jessica Dallow, Ph.D. “We are excited to offer a variety of hands-on experiences across a range of media and engage our UAB students and colleagues, local high school students, and community in this unique way.”
Visitors will learn how to screen-print on tote bags with Assistant Professor of Printmaking Derek Cracco, MFA; Assistant Professor of Drawing and Bookmaking Doug Baulos, MFA, will demonstrate Japanese kanuko and kumo itajime dyeing techniques with natural dyes; Assistant Professor of Sculpture Stacey Holloway, MFA, will share how plastic slosh casting molds are fabricated; and Outreach/Media Coordinator Jared Ragland, MFA, will make 19th century wet-plate collodion tintype portraits.
