Fun and interactive activities designed to cultivate creative thinking skills will immerse young thinkers into the world of science, technology, engineering and math at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Engineering and the Society of Women Engineers’ Kids in Engineering Day. The sixth annual event will take place Saturdays, Feb. 10 and 17, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the UAB Business and Engineering Complex.
This year’s theme, Branching Out, highlights the different disciplines of engineering offered at UAB, including mechanical, electrical, civil, biomedical and material science. Students in the fourth through sixth grades will use teamwork and creativity to construct a bottle rocket that they will get to see take off into the air. Prizes will be awarded for highest launch, safest vehicle, least expensive design and more.
The cost of Kids in Engineering Day is $30 per student and includes educational components throughout the day, T-shirt and lunch. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. Register or sign up to volunteer online.
