An art event will be held Aug. 17 to engage the cancer community in the healing power of art.

The event, held Thursday, Aug. 17, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at UAB’s North Pavilion Atrium, is designed to help people affected by cancer cope with the emotional side of the disease.

“Therapeutic art is an excellent way for patients, survivors and families to cope with the trauma of cancer diagnosis,” said Teri Hoenemeyer, Ph.D., director of Education and Support Services at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. “We’re really excited to be able to share this opportunity as a way to honor a loved one, a friend or a patient, or just to celebrate life.”

Sponsored by Lily Oncology on Canvas, UAB Arts in Medicine and the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center, this event honors all who are affected by cancer. Each individual piece is inspired by artists who are featured in the Lily Oncology on Canvas program to encourage connectivity with others through creative expression that shares changes, experiences and emotions experienced throughout the cancer journey.

Anyone touched by cancer is welcome and encouraged to share their story through this program. The finished colorful artwork will be placed on display in different clinical areas at UAB.

No registration is required. No art experience is necessary, and art supplies will be provided.

This event is open to the public. For detailed information, contact Hoenemeyer at tgw318@uab.edu or 205-934-5772.
