The Robert E. Reed GI Oncology Research Foundation and the University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center are sponsoring a second annual Living with Cancer symposium Monday, May 15, from 1-4 p.m. at the UAB National Alumni Society House, 1301 10th Ave. South in Birmingham.
Guest speakers will provide informed strategies for improving the health and well-being of cancer survivors. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.
Speakers and topics include:
Family Communication: Build awareness and understanding of the importance of need-specific communications between all groups — families, surgeons, hospital personnel; Marty Heslin M.D., executive vice-chair in the UAB Department of Surgery and chief of medical staff at UAB Hospital
Coordinated Cancer Care/Navigators: Explain the impact of cancer navigation programs on access, disparity, utilization and patient-level outcomes; Elizabeth Kvale, M.D., director of the UAB Supportive Care and Survivorship Outpatient Clinic
Frailty and Sarcopenia: Provide awareness about the implications of frailty on cancer patients and how to improve the condition; Sushanth Reddy, M.D., assistant professor in the UAB Department of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology
Exercise and Diet: Help patients understand the importance of a healthy diet and current exercise recommendations; Laura Q. Rogers, M.D., MPH, professor in UAB Department of Nutrition Sciences
Diet Supplements: Describe the importance of dietary supplements in the oncology setting and help patients choose a safe supplement; Carolina Salvador, M.D., director of the UAB Integrative Medicine Clinic
