University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center as one of the nation’s “100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs.”
Becker’s Hospital Review has named theThe UAB Cancer Center, the only one listed from the state of Alabama, was selected for the 2016 edition for leading the way in clinical expertise, patient outcomes and influential cancer research. Specifically, UAB was noted for offering patients comprehensive cancer care involving teams of specialists, participation in clinical trials and personalized treatment programs.
Becker’s Hospital Review is a monthly publication offering up-to-date business and legal news and analysis relating to hospitals and health systems. It also publishes a number of lists of outstanding facilities and individuals throughout the year.
Hospitals were selected for inclusion on the list based on recognitions received and accreditations earned. The editorial team at Becker’s examined U.S. News & World Report cancer care rankings, CareChex cancer care rankings, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Blue Distinction Center designation, National Cancer Institute designations, and American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer accreditations and awards.
The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the Deep South region, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia Louisiana, Mississippi and South Carolina. The center is home to outstanding faculty of more than 330 physicians and researchers who treat 5,000 new patients each year and provides ongoing care to more than 20,000 cancer patients each year.
It is recognized as a Blue Distinction Center for Complex & Rare Cancers by Blue Cross Blue Shield and recently received a $29 million grant from the NCI that will go toward innovative and impactful cancer research. In the last five years, researchers from the UAB Cancer Center have generated more than 1,600 peer-reviewed, cancer-focused publications.
