A one-night-only student art showcase, “Outer Skin/Inner Space” will be on exhibition from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Presented by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Art and Art History, the exhibition will take place in Project Space, a versatile student gallery space, 900 13th St. South.
Works in the showcase feature mixed-media artwork from Department of Art and Art History Assistant Professor Stacey Holloway’s spring 2016 Contemporary Woodworking class and Assistant Professor Doug Baulos’ Hybrid Material Studies class. The exhibition will showcase students’ individual projects as well as collaborative works between the classes highlighting the department’s commitment to the Quality Enhancement Plan, “Learning in a Team Environment.” As teams, the students worked to build metaphorical shelters from natural and recyclable materials.
Contemporary Woodworking explores the techniques and processes of traditional woodworking while applying these methods to contemporary ideas. Students will advance their craft in joinery, turning, bending, carving and finishing while developing a contemporary vocabulary of form and function.
Hybrid Material Studies allows students to engage in research oriented around fiber materials, material studies, action and craft, within a contemporary art context and supported by current theoretical discourse. Using art as a vehicle for science, sociology, history, politics and economics, students connect the seemingly disparate dots that form the complex tapestry of existence and become activists and artists seeking to effect social change in the class’s Woven Project. Students will be encouraged to experiment with different approaches to the creative process in search of outcomes that cannot be predicted in advance.
Participating students are: Jennifer Allen, Mia Badham, Kathryn Cooper, Annabelle Decamillis, Zachary Edison, Jake Estes, Caroline Etheridge, Jonah Grice, Lauren Harbison, Timothy Harstvedt, Melody Hollenbeck, Katelyn Ledford, Morgan Mahan, Kristin Martin, Meredith Martin, Bryce Martinez, Ryan Meriwether, Linda Merry, Kristen Miller, Cynthia Moore, Amanda Morgado, Chloe Muse, Tuan Ngo, Sav Owen, Jacob Phillip, Hannah Rettig, Vincent Rizzo, Alex Whitehead and Daryl Wilson.
