The University of Alabama at Birmingham Army ROTC competed in the 2015 Regional Ranger Challenge Competition held at Oak Mountain State Park on Nov. 6. UAB served as the host of this year’s event.

The UAB Intercollegiate Varsity Ranger Challenge Team took top statewide honors the past three years.This year’s team took first place in the one-rope bridge and written examination events, and placed second overall.

The purpose of the Ranger Challenge is to test cadets in tough mental and physical competitions, enhance leader development, develop team cohesion, and develop healthy competition among battalions. This voluntary competition offers teamwork training while demanding the cadets’ best physical and mental efforts. Events include land navigation, constructing a one-rope bridge which teams use to cross a water obstacle, a 10-mile ruck race, ruck lifts, situps, casualty evaluation, a 1,500-meter sprint and written examinations.

This year’s participants included Alabama A&M, Auburn University, Jacksonville State University, University of Alabama, University of North Alabama, University of South Alabama, and University of West Florida.
