A group of UAB faculty, staff, students, and alumni from Nepal along with Alabama Nepalese Association are organizing fundraisers to help the victims of the April 25 earthquake that struck that nation. They will hold an event on UAB’s campus at 5:30 p.m. May 15 at the Edge of Chaos, on the 4th floor of the Lister Hill Library, 1700 University Blvd.
The group will be requesting donations to support the immediate needs of those affected by the disaster. The quake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale and killed an estimated 7,000 people. The death toll will undoubtedly go higher. 500,000 people remain displaced from their homes. After shocks and landslides continue to threaten the survivors.
“Alabamians are no strangers to natural disasters and know firsthand how hard it can be for a community or nation to recover from devastation of this magnitude,” said Samir Rana, a graduate student in the Department of Psychiatry, and native of Nepal. “Please help us provide the support and supplies that are so desperately needed.”
