Faculty and students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Department of Computer and Information Sciences are the recipients of the Best Paper Award for research presented at the 2014 Automated Software Engineering International Conference on Social Informatics held at Harvard University.
The winning paper, “Spam Campaign Cluster Detection Using Redirected URLs and Randomized Sub-Domains,” was presented by the paper’s lead author, Abu Awal Md Shoeb, on Dec. 14 at the conference, which was a forum for researchers to network and further research in social informatics — an interdisciplinary research domain that includes social studies, human dynamics, computing science and industrial engineering technologies that consider social context.
The group’s research explores the clustering of SPAM emails by URL redirects and randomized sub-domains to help detect major SPAM campaigns.
Graduate students Dibya Mukhopadhyay and Shahid Al Noor co-authored the paper, along with Computer and Information Sciences Professor Alan Sprague, Ph.D., and Gary Warner, director of Research in Computer Forensics at UAB. Both Shoeb and Al Noor work at the CIS SECRETLab under the supervision of Ragib Hasan, Ph.D. Mukhopadhyay works at the CIS SPIES lab under the supervision of Nitesh Saxena, Ph.D.
