The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will celebrate its annual Community Week Jan. 19-26, 2013, with a multitude of activities. The mission is to highlight UAB’s diverse community, as well as to provide opportunities to learn about and appreciate cultures through lectures, discussions, films, volunteer projects and other events.
The week kicks off Saturday, Jan. 19, with a free concert featuring the UAB Honor Choir performing “Songs of Freedom” at 3 p.m. in the Alys Stephens Center (ASC). On Monday, Jan. 21, students from UAB and Miles College will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a joint community service event. Also during that week, there will be an international bazaar, a civic engagement fair, a game of wheelchair flag football, a play based on court transcripts from the overturning of Proposition 8 in California and more.
