Students in grades 4-6 are invited to participate in the eighth annual Kids in Engineering Day, an event of the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s chapter of the Society of Women Engineers. Participants can choose to attend either the Saturday, Feb. 15 or 22, sessions. The events will be from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., located at the Business Engineering Complex, 1150 10th Ave. South.
Participants will be able to take part in a variety of activities and competitions designed to provide insight into different types of science, technology, engineering and math concepts.
Students will get hands-on experience in STEM activities that will excite and inspire them to explore the world in new and interesting ways. Alongside Kids in Engineering Day, a Parent Educator Program will supplement the efforts of the day’s activities by providing resources and ideas.
“We believe it is very important to introduce STEM ideas and activities to kids at an early age,” said Emma Schmidt, SWE’s president. “We want all kids to understand that there are practical applications that come from the math and science they learn in school. We also want to create an environment for kids to be hands-on and have the chance to try new things. We want all kids to have confidence in their ability in STEM fields, but it’s especially important for girls and other groups who are traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering.”
A panel of engineers and engineering students will also be available to answer any questions parents and educators may have regarding STEM education.
A maximum of 60 students can be hosted per day.
