University of Alabama at Birmingham students, faculty and staff will join forces with Birmingham residents to honor Martin Luther King Jr. by moving Birmingham closer to King’s global vision — a “beloved community.”
MLK’s Beloved Community, formerly known as MLK Jr. Day of Service, is an annual event to honor King through community outreach. Orchestrated by the UAB Leadership and Service Council, a student-led campus organization, participants will spend the national holiday volunteering at various locations around the city through Hands-On Birmingham.
This year, MLK’s Beloved Community will kick off the 2020 Creed Week, a weeklong celebration of the honor and integrity, diversity, innovation, service and scholarship at UAB.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20, at the UAB Campus Recreation Center. Once checked in, volunteers will be served brunch, and then will travel to their assigned service sites to work from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
