The University of Alabama at Birmingham community will lend a helping hand Saturday, Oct. 12, for a day of service.
UAB students, faculty and staff come together twice a year for Into the Streets to serve the Birmingham community. Since its inaugural event in 1999, volunteers have cleaned, organized, built and repaired areas throughout the city. Into the Streets, sponsored by the Leadership and Service Council, is designed to connect UAB to the Birmingham community.
Volunteers will meet at 8:30 a.m. in the Hill Student Center Amphitheater. Service hours at locations throughout the city will follow until 12:30 p.m. As part of this year’s event, a celebration will be held for the 20th year of Into the Streets service, as well as the day’s contribution to UAB’s 50 Acts of Service initiative that is part the institution’s 50th anniversary year.
Between 500 and 600 volunteer opportunities are expected at sites including Angel’s Hope, Village Creek, Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind, Glen Iris community cleanup, Habitat Campus Club at UAB, Habitat Build, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Lovelady Thrift Store, The Lovelady Center, Mock Ross Preserve, Cherry Hill Healthcare Center, Fair Haven Retirement Community, YMCA, Assisting Pathways, 55th Place Thrift Store, STAIR, and Bluff Park United Methodist Church.
