University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Collat School of Business, School of Nursing, and Police and Public Safety headquarters all received an award from the Associated Builders and Contractors Alabama Chapter for their newly constructed buildings, each of which opened in 2018.
The“As we continue to update and construct new buildings on campus, it is important that we work with skilled tradespeople and construction professionals who take pride in their work,” said Greg Parsons, assistant vice president of Facilities Planning Design and Construction. “When people work together in a spirit of cooperation and shared mission, the result is a successful project for all involved.”
The ABC Alabama Chapter is a trade association dedicated to serving construction professionals within the state of Alabama. This was the chapter’s 29th year of selecting award winners.
UAB’s campus awards were broken into three categories with an additional honorable mention: General Contractor Community/Public Service: Wyatt General Contractor, LLC, for the UAB Police headquarters; Institutional $25-50M: Brasfield and Gorrie, LLC, for the UAB Collat School of Business; Other Specialty Commercial: Adkins & Kimbrough Mechanical, LLC, for the UAB School of Nursing; and Honorable Mention: Mechanical Commercial Less than $2M, Trinity Contractors for the UAB Police Headquarters.
Located along the north side of University Boulevard between 12th and 13th streets south, the Collat School of Business building offers a modern learning environment and the technology infrastructure expected to competitively recruit the next generation of business leaders, as well as top faculty and staff dedicated to educating them. Open seating areas throughout the building promote collaboration and a sense of community, affiliation and connection to UAB while furthering innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities.
With the latest technology-enhanced classrooms and nursing competency labs — including an actual operating room and lifelike manikins — the expanded and renovated School of Nursing building will help the school further elevate its leadership role in educating students and developing nurse faculty and nurse scientists to continue to drive the future of nursing and health care in Alabama and around the world.
The ground floor of the UAB Police and Public Safety facility includes a lobby area for public information and interaction with UAB police, a records storage area, evidence processing and evidence storage areas, patrol department staff offices, and an officer roll-call area. The building also includes UAB Security Services staff offices, a breakroom, men’s and women’s locker rooms with showers, an in-house weight room, communication department staff offices, and a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week emergency call center.
“We are proud to see three of our recent projects partners recognized with awards, and one honorable mention,” Parson said. “We strive to develop and maintain great working relationships with these and other leading forward-thinking construction companies. These projects are important to our UAB community, and to potential students in their decision-making process.”
