Each year, approximately 135 colleges and universities are invited to nominate a student for the Beinecke Scholarship Program. All participating institutions are encouraged to submit a single nomination each year.
This year, the University of Alabama at Birmingham has been invited to participate as a nominating institution and is the first institution in the state of Alabama invited to nominate students for the highly competitive award.
“We are thrilled to support outstanding students with financial need as they pursue graduate degrees in the arts, humanities and social sciences,” said Ashley Kuntz, Ph.D., director and assistant professor for honors administration, strategic initiatives and fellowships. “Our faculty nominating committee looks forward to mentoring exceptional applicants in the years to come.”
To be eligible for a Beinecke Scholarship, students must have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and personal promise during their undergraduate careers. Each student must be a college junior, plan to enter a research-focused master’s or doctoral program, be a United States citizen or a United States national from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and have a documented history for receiving need-based financial aid during his or her undergraduate years.
Funding from the Beinecke Scholarship Program will provide a $4,000 scholarship directly to the student, followed by an additional $30,000 award for financial support while attending graduate school.
Interested students should contact fellowships@uab.edu no later than Tuesday, Jan. 15.
The Beinecke Scholarship Program was established in 1971 by the Board of Directors of The Sperry and Hutchinson Company to honor Edwin, Frederick and Walter Beinecke. The Board created an endowment to provide substantial scholarships for the graduate education of young men and women of exceptional promise. The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in the selection of a graduate course of study in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
