Young artists get pointers at Alabama High School Portfolio Review Day

Open to all high school students, the event will include faculty and representatives from UAB and four more schools.

PortfolioReviewFlyerHigh school students interested in pursuing an education in visual art can meet with college art programs across the state at the 2018 Alabama High School Portfolio Review Day.

The inaugural event will be 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, presented by the College of Arts and SciencesDepartment of Art and Art History.

Free and open to all high school students, the event will include faculty and representatives from college art programs across the state including UAB, the University of Alabama, Birmingham-Southern College, University of Montevallo and Samford University.

The 2018 Alabama High School Portfolio Review Day will be in UAB’s Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, located at 1221 10th Ave. South. High school students, parents, teachers and guidance counselors are encouraged to attend. The reviews provide a unique opportunity to meet and have one-on-one conversations with college art professors, ask questions and receive critical guidance. Each portfolio review will last approximately 10 minutes. Students are encouraged to meet with representatives from each school. During the review, students can receive feedback, discuss college degree programs and learn about professional careers in art. A portfolio review is not an exam or competition. No admissions decisions or scholarship awards will be offered at the review.

In addition to portfolio reviews, the UAB Department of Art and Art History will provide light refreshments, studio demonstrations and a tour of UAB studio classrooms. UAB campus tours will also be available, and works by UAB art studio faculty will be on view in the AEIVA galleries.

What students should bring:

Portfolios should feature a student’s best work and may also include works in progress and sketchbooks. Original artwork is encouraged, but digital portfolios can also be reviewed on a student’s personal laptop or tablet. Access to electrical outlets and Wi-Fi are not guaranteed. While a portfolio presentation should be organized and neatly presented, portfolio cases or matted/framed works are not necessary.
