Presented in collaboration by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music, Birmingham Art Music Alliance, and the Abroms-Engel Institute for the Visual Arts, “Chamber Music @ AEIVA” connects chamber music with the visual arts. The music for this performance was chosen in conjunction with the current exhibition, “David Levinthal: Playland.” Considered to be one of the first postmodern photographers, Levinthal uses toys and miniature figures as subjects for his images. He uses much of his work to question the role of photography as a reliable presentation of historical fact through intricately restaging significant moments or cultural milestones throughout history.
Gallery viewing and a reception are at 5 p.m., and the concert is at 5:30 p.m. in the AEIVA’s Odess Gallery, 1221 10th Ave. South. The event is free and open to the public.
The seventh installment of “Chamber Music @ AEIVA” will feature world premieres by two composers from the Birmingham Art Music Alliance, Tom Reiner and UAB alumnus and adjunct music instructor Matthew Scott Phillips. The performing musicians are Lisa Wienhold, flute, and Chris Steele, piano, from UAB; Pei-Ju Wu, violin, from the Alabama Symphony Orchestra; and Tim Feeney, percussion, from the University of Alabama Department of Music.
A closing reception for “David Levinthal: Playland” is planned for 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 2, in the AEIVA. Prior to the reception, Levinthal will speak publicly about his work at 5 p.m. Both events are free.
AEIVA is open to the public 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 12-6 p.m. Saturday. It is closed Sundays and holidays.
