E. Michael Harrington, D.M.A., will present the lecture “Fair Use and Copyright Abuse: How Business and Litigation Are Changing Music Copyright Law and Business Practices” at 7 p.m. Aug. 28, 2013, in University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. Harrington, who teaches entrepreneurship at the Berklee College of Music, is on the advisory board of the Future of Music Coalition and owner of E Michael Music.com. He was the 1995 Jemison Professor of the Humanities at UAB.
Harrington will discuss copyright protection and publishing and answer questions about such issues as copyright infringement, resolving disputes, assessing a writer’s contribution and when it is OK to copy a sound or style or sample an artist. And, using a wide selection of audio and visual examples, he’ll demonstrate examples of serious music business mistakes.
He is a consultant and expert witness in music copyright and intellectual property matters and has worked with the Dixie Chicks, Steven Spielberg, Steve Perry, Sting, Tupac Shakur, Lady Gaga, Keith Urban, Ne-Yo and others. He lectures throughout North America and has been interviewed by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, CNN, Time magazine, NPR, Associated Press, PBS, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and others.
