Ryan Anthony, principal trumpet of the Dallas Symphony and former member of the world-famous Canadian Brass, will present a trumpet clinic for students and a free solo recital on the UAB campus Monday, Nov. 12, 2012.
The clinic will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. The recital will be performed at 7 p.m. in UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South. Both events are free and open to the public. The recital will include UAB staff accompanist Maria Lyapkova, piano, and Assistant Professor James Zingara, D.M.A., trumpet. The events are presented by the UAB Department of Music.
A virtuoso performer at a very early age, Anthony is known for his varied career as a soloist, educator, chamber musician and orchestral player. Having departed the brass ensemble Canadian Brass in 2003, Anthony became one of the most sought-after trumpet players in the country. He continues to win over audiences and critics with his charismatic performances and artistic finesse. A Memphis Commercial Appeal review said of Anthony: “In his hands, the horn gets beyond the stereotype to become a mouthpiece for the composer’s voice and performer’s personality.” Fanfare Magazine noted that “there must be other trumpet players in this world as fine as Ryan Anthony, but you’d never think so while listening to him play.”
Anthony has appeared as a soloist with more than 30 ensembles, including the Dallas, St. Louis, Springfield, Dayton and Winston-Salem symphonies; Wisconsin and Portland chamber orchestras; and the Pershing’s Own Army Band in Washington, D.C. Summer festivals with solo engagements have included the New Hampshire Music Festival; Eastern Music Festival; Piccolo Spoleto Festival; Sewanee Music Festival; Blast of Brass and international Pan-Pacific Music Festival in Sydney, Australia; Affinis Music Festival in Hiroshima, Japan; and Banff Music Festival in Alberta, Canada. Since 2004 he has appeared as principal trumpet for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and Colorado Symphony, and played in the sections of the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra and Israel Philharmonic.
