Rising seventh- through 12th-graders can broaden their musical skills at the 2021 Symphonic Band Camp, on the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus June 14-18.
Presented by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music, the nonresidential camp will offer area students a comprehensive musical experience right here in the Magic City.
The week of music-making opportunities includes a full band experience, small ensemble participation, and training in music theory, literature, conducting, music technology and jazz improvisation. In addition, students will have the opportunity to study privately with members of the UAB Department of Music faculty. Camp hours are 2-5 p.m. Monday, June 14; and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. June 15-18.
Applications will be accepted until May 28. Camp tuition is $350. Register online or visit uab.edu/cas/music.
All camps are registered with UAB’s Youth Protection program; the protocols UAB and the UA System put into place for in-person summer camps are based on the current environment and are subject to change. These may include:
- Daily temperature checks
- Staggered pickup/drop-off
- Masking
- Current social distancing guidelines
- Small group classes
- Outdoor performances/art galleries
Students will audition for placement upon arrival. Campers will rehearse daily in preparation for a performance for family and friends at the close of the camp sessions. All students will take part in sessions specializing on their particular instrument; professional musicians on each instrument will lead classes in musical techniques and performance practices and assist students in improving sectional tone quality, pitch, articulation and balance issues. Students will have the chance to develop skills conducive to improving music reading and will choose one or two elective classes, from Jazz Band, Conducting, Improvisation, Music Technology, Clarinet Choir and Tuba/Euphonium Choir.
