After years of experimenting with home beer brewing and refining his craft, Meyer and a group of friends devised a plan to open a brewery, and in 2011, Cahaba Brewing Co. was born. Nine years later, Cahaba Brewing is one of the most popular and successful breweries in Birmingham. Meyer is able to put his scientific background to good use, and says he relies on research methods honed during his years at UAB to improve upon the production process and create a clean and consistent product.
In 2015, Meyer was recognized by the UAB National Alumni Society as a member of the UAB Excellence in Business Top 25 class. In 2017, he was honored with the College of Arts and Sciences’ Distinguished Young Alumni Award, and he is a 2020 member of the UAB CAS Alumni Board. In January, Meyer was a guest on the UAB Green and Told podcast, a biweekly podcast that shares stories from members of the UAB community. Meyer also regularly lends an ear and mentorship to UAB undergraduate students aspiring to be entrepreneurs and scientists.
Since its inception in 1980, the UAB NAS has put an emphasis on awarding student scholarships. In 2018-2019, the NAS, partnered with UAB schools and colleges, raised more than $2.6 million from alumni to provide student scholarships.
