Pianist Kate Liu will perform Sunday, March 29, for the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Piano Series.
A fan favorite wherever she goes, international pianist Liu won third prize and Best Mazurkas at the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in 2015 in Warsaw, Poland. She also took home the audience favorite award (Polish Radio Award), in which radio listeners voted her the best pianist. Liu has also proved herself popular with judges worldwide; she was the first-prize winner at both the New York International Piano and the Asia-Pacific International Chopin Competition.
The UAB Piano Series, presented by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music, brings the world’s finest pianists to Birmingham. Distinguished Professor of Piano and Artist-in-Residence Yakov Kasman, DMA, a Van Cliburn medalist, directs the series. Liu’s performance will close the 2019-2020 UAB Piano Series season.

On the program for Liu’s Birmingham performance are Schumann’s Arabesque Op. 18, Schubert’s Six Musical Moments, Op. 94, and Brahms’ Piano Sonata No. 3, Op. 5.
Liu’s international competition medals also include third prize in 2010 at the Thomas & Evon Cooper International Competition in Oberlin, Ohio, and third prize in 2012 at the Eastman Young Artist International Piano Competition in Rochester, New York. Liu is from Winnetka, Illinois, and has been playing the piano since she was 4 years old.
