Denise Gainey, DMAClarinet players from around the country are headed to the University of Alabama at Birmingham for the 17th annual UAB Clarinet Symposium, March 16-17.
The 17th annual UAB Clarinet Symposium is presented by the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Music. The weekend is filled with workshops, master classes, clarinet choir, recitals and clinics by 16 of the nation’s finest clarinetists. Sponsors include Backun Musical Services, D’Addario Woodwinds and Art’s Music Shop.
Special guest artists for the event are Shawn Copeland, DMA, assistant professor of clarinet in the Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho and Alexander Technique specialist, and Sean Osborn, DMA, chamber musician, educator and composer. Copeland is the principal clarinetist of the Washington/Idaho Symphony Orchestra and the co-director of the Stetson University Clarinet Clinic. Osborn has performed on four continents since his recital debut at the age of 17 at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Osborn was the youngest clarinetist in the history of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and has also performed with the New York Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, Seattle Symphony and the American Symphony Orchestra.
Guest artist Corrado Giuffredi has been forced to withdraw from the symposium due to illness.
The weekend includes two free concerts open to the public. The first is at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 16, at UAB’s Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. South. The finale concert will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 17, at UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center, Jemison Concert Hall, 1200 10th Ave. South.
Registration for the symposium will include participation in all events and lunch for both Saturday and Sunday. All participants will perform in the final clarinet choirs recital.
