What to Expect from the Visit
At your appointment, your neurologist will sit down with you and go over your symptoms in detail. It is strongly recommended that you bring any images (MRIs, CT scans) of your brain or spinal cord with you to the appointment. If you bring these on a disc, we can review the images together in the room. We will go over your case in summary and develop a plan going forward of how to best help you with your illness and symptoms. We will send a detailed note to your local physicians so that they can help implement our plan for your care. New patients should plan to arrive at least 20 minutes prior to your appointment time at the Kirklin Clinic parking deck so that you can get over to the clinic and checked in by your appointment time.
What to Bring
When you come to your appointment at any UAB facility, please bring a list of any prescription and over the counter medications that you are currently taking, any pertinent medical records/medical information that have not already been sent to our office by your referring physician, your insurance card, and a copy of your physician referral, if needed. Please also bring prior MRIs or other imaging. We ask that all images be brought at the time of the visit on a disc. Please do not mail images to the Clinic prior to your visit.
How We Can Communicate After the Visit
We have multiple ways of keeping in touch following your visit. The UAB Portal System is a free and convenient tool that allows you to log in to our healthcare computerized system so that you can review lab results, imaging results and communicate with us through a secure system. You can sign up for free access to our system at www.uabmedicine.org/me. You can also call our office at 205-934-2402, and we will return your call as soon as possible - usually within 24 hours.
How/When to Expect Results from the Evaluation
We will often conduct several blood tests during your evaluation and may need additional imaging performed. Some of the blood tests may take up to 10 business days to return. Once the last lab has results, we will mail you a letter with the results or send you a message through the UAB Portal system if you have signed up for this free, convenient service. We will also send a detailed note of our discussion and plan to your primary care doctor and, if applicable, referring neurologist. Results from images performed at UAB will usually be mailed to you via letter or portal message within 48 hours.
How to Obtain Medical Records
