University Hospital
The goal of this experience is to provide the resident sufficient exposure and experience to diagnose and treat all adult urologic conditions. On this busy inpatient adult Urology service the residents will get extensive exposure to urologic oncology, laparoscopy, robotic prostatectomy, endourology and stone disease, and urologic trauma.
The Children's Hospital of Alabama
The goal of this experience is to provide the resident sufficient exposure and experience to diagnose and treat pediatric urologic conditions. This is a busy academic pediatric Urology service with three full time pediatric urologists. Residents will be exposed to and participate in the care of patients representing the entire spectrum of pediatric urologic disorders.
Birmingham VA Medical Center
The goal of this experience is to provide the resident sufficient exposure and experience to diagnose and treat adult urologic conditions. The chief resident should progress over the course of the year to be able to perform the major/complex urologic procedures. The junior resident is given increasing responsibility with patient care as the year progresses and when considered appropriate by the faculty and chief resident. The junior resident should progress over the year to be able to perform basic urological procedures and assist on more complex procedures.
UAB Highlands
At UAB Highlands, residents are exposed this hospital, also part of the UAB health system, which is a somewhat differewnt environment than a large tertiary hospital like the Univeristy Hospital. On this rotation, residents will be exposed to a female urology, incontinence, microsurgery, stone disease, prosthetics, reconstruction and general urology.
St. Vincent's Birmingham/Cooper Green
This new rotation is designed to provide a dynamic and enriching experience focused on exposure to a wide variety of patients, continuity of care, and enhanced outpatient/office-based clinical activities.
Night Float
Rather than taking traditional call Sunday through Thursday, PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents cover the night float service from 6 PM through 6 AM. The resident stays in house during this time, providing care for the inpatients and sees inpatient consultations. On Tuesday morning, the resident is expected to attend the weekly didactic conference.
