RS20511 036UAB Robotics scrThe Department of Urology residency program is a five year program consisting of a preliminary year followed by four years of urology. Our preliminary year provides an introduction to urology and prepares the residents to care for complicated patients they will routinely encounter on the urology service.

Our training program has numerous strengths including exposure to all urologic subspecialties, the opportunity to work in different health care delivery systems and a growing research enterprise. We have busy clinical services with high volume surgical experience. We anticipate continued growth in our faculty and increased opportunities for education. In addition, UAB is among the top institutions nationally and Birmingham is a wonderful place to work and live.

Our goal is to train urologists to either enter practice immediately or to pursue postgraduate fellowship training in their particular area of interest. Because of the broad exposure provided by our program, our graduates have the flexibility to pursue their interests upon completing their training. We use a program of graded responsibility to accomplish this goal. Our residency training program has fellowship trained faculty in all urologic subspecialties including:

  • Urologic oncology

  • Pediatric urology

  • Laparoscopy/robotics

  • Neurourology/voiding dysfunction

  • Female pelvic medicine and surgery

  • Erectile dysfunction

  • Stone disease/endourology

  • Male infertility

  • Genitourinary reconstruction and gender affirming surgery

  • Cancer survivorship

Our residents have the opportunity to learn about several different healthcare delivery systems. Residents rotate among University Hospital, UAB Highlands, Children’s of Alabama, Birmingham Veterans’ Administration Hospital, and St. Vincent’s East. Each of these hospitals provides a different type of educational experience. Our healthcare system is changing rapidly and physicians will need to be able to adapt to these changes.

Our department has made great strides in research in the last few years. Our department has two laboratories with extramural funding devoted to urologic research. One laboratory carries out basic stone disease research and the other laboratory examines the biology of renal cell carcinoma. Our diverse research endeavors provide the opportunity for residents to present at our regional and national meetings. Our residents are expected to complete one project per year. The faculty are committed to mentoring residents in this research endeavor.

The program is committed to providing strong didactic education for our residents. We a have weekly adult urology conference, with protected time, on Tuesday from 6:30 – 8 AM. Conferences include didactic lectures, morbidity and mortality conference, journal club, multidisciplinary conferences (with radiology and pathology), imaging conference, and genitourinary imaging lectures.

Residents are selected based on their academic record, extracurricular activities, and leadership qualities. Our residents exhibit all of these qualities, and they, along with committed a faculty, are truly our program’s greatest assets.
