Biography

After two years in private practice, Dr. Patterson joined the faculty at UAB in 2003 as assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2013. Originally from Tuscaloosa, Ala., Dr. Patterson calls Clemson, S.C., —where his parents were college professors—his home. He attended Furman University for undergraduate education and graduated with honors. Upon graduation from Furman, he completed his medical education at Bowman Gray School of Medicine (currently Wake Forest University Medical School), graduating in 1994. Dr. Patterson then completed his surgical training at University of Alabama at Birmingham, being named administrative chief resident during his final year. His experience at UAB cultivated an interest in vascular surgery which led to his fellowship in vascular surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin under the leadership of Jonathan B. Towne, M.D., from which he graduated in 2001.

Dr. Patterson is a specialist in vascular surgery, and a dedicated educator. He particularly enjoys concentrated, hands-on intraoperative training and education. Additionally, he has served as a preceptor for third-year medical students and has consistently participated in didactic lectures for the third-year medical student surgery rotations. Dr. Patterson is the former ambulatory medical director for the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at The Kirklin Clinic but has recently assumed the role as medical directory for the Ambulatory Vascular Laboratory also housed in The Kirklin Clinic.

Dr. Patterson serves as a peer reviewer for the Journal Vascular Surgery (distinguished reviewer, 2012, 2013) Annals of Vascular Surgery, American Journal of Surgery.

He has participated in regional and national vascular surgery societies in various capacities, most notably as a participant in the Mock Oral Exam offered by the Southern Association of Vascular Surgery, and as a former program committee chair for the Vascular & Endovascular Surgery Society (formerly PVSS).

Dr. Patterson has mentored numerous faculty, post-doctoral fellows, residents, medical students, and undergraduates. Outside of his work Dr. Patterson, is involved with numerous community activities. He serves as deacon for Mountain Brook Baptist Church and is active in the Altamont School Parent’s Association.
