The UAB Department of Surgery had a strong presence at Surgery Education Week 2018. This joint meeting, hosted earlier this month in Austin, Texas, by the Association of Surgical Education and the Association of Program Directors in Surgery, brings together surgical educators from around the world.
The Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery’s Britney Corey, M.D., and the Division of Acute Care Surgery’s Kim Hendershot, M.D., attended workshops for clerkship directors and program directors, respectively.
“We look forward to even more UAB Surgery attendees in the future,” Corey said.
General Surgery Residency Program Director John Porterfield, M.D., moderated a session on “Introducing Disruptive Technologies to Surgical Training,” while Associate Program Director Brenessa Lindeman, M.D., hosted two workshops, as well as the Royce Laycock Lectureship where she spoke on “Entrustable Professional Activities: Practical Competency-Based Assessment in Surgical Education or just the next fad?”
General surgery chief resident Bob Hollis, M.D., Porterfield and Lindeman were featured on the Thinking Outside the Box video loop for their work on “Being Prepared for Tragic Events Involving Residents: Design of a Tragic Event Communication Protocol.” General surgery resident Samantha Baker, M.D., the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery’s Melanie Morris, M.D., Lindeman and Corey also presented “Surgery Resident Assessment: the use of Quality in Training Initiative (QITI) Outcomes Compared to Milestones.”
