The UAB Department of Surgery had much to celebrate in 2024 - from innovations in patient care, to cutting-edge research, to welcoming new faculty members and trainees.

From UAB to Afghanistan: how an Air Force Special Operations Surgical Team saved lives during the last days of the War in Afghanistan
August, 2021. Birmingham, Alabama. After working an overnight trauma call at UAB Hospital, six healthcare professionals gathered for a routine Friday morning meeting to discuss how their shift went. They didn’t know that within 48 hours, they would be bound for Kabul, Afghanistan, to join the dangerous and deadly effort to evacuate American citizens, allies, and Afghan refugees.

The UAB Department of Surgery was honored to welcome 14 residents across three residency programs in the 2024 Match.
First robotic pediatric thoracic surgery performed at Children's Hospital
UAB Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery Professor Benjamin Wei, M.D., performed the first pediatric thoracic surgery utilizing a robotic surgical system at Children’s of Alabama marking a milestone in the improvement of pediatric surgical care.
