UAB Department of Surgery Division of Transplantation Assistant Professor Saulat Sheikh, M.D., FACS, has been selected for the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine Argus Award for Best Clinical Skills Scholar in CRISP (Clinical Reasoning and Integrated Skills Program).
A Clinical Skills Scholar (CSS) in this program works closely with medical students to provide an integrated curriculum of training and mentoring in clinical skills and professionalism.
The Argus Society was founded in 1996 by students as a way to recognize faculty who exhibit excellence in medical education. The Argus Award is presented to faculty, residents, courses and clerkships nominated by students and selected by the Argus Society Awards Committee.
“It gives me great satisfaction and pleasure to contribute to the development of competent and compassionate healthcare professionals” says Dr. Sheikh. “As a Clinical Skills Scholar (CSS), it is my core responsibility to not only impart factual information but also model ethical behavior and compassion that is entrusted upon us by the patients at their most vulnerable times.”
Dr. Sheikh received her medical school education from the Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan. She subsequently moved to York, Pennsylvania, to complete her general surgery residency. She obtained specialty training in abdominal transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and stayed on as faculty in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Sheikh is dedicated to the intellectual growth of her students, trainees and colleagues -- a commitment reflected in her numerous roles as an educator and mentor.
