UAB Division of Breast & Endocrine Surgery Assistant Professor and Global Surgery Associate Vice Chair Lily Gutnik, M.D., MPH, has been selected for membership in the American Society of Breast Surgeons' International Committee.
Gutnik is passionate about researching best practice techniques to implement breast cancer screening and early detection infrastructures in low-resource settings. She helped establish Malawi's first breast cancer screening initiative and currently collaborates on various breast cancer projects in Tanzania, Kenya, Cameroon, and Pakistan. She is an avid mentor and advisor for trainees in the global surgery equity space and is currently a co-supervisor of a Ph.D. student in Tanzania studying factors contributing to late-stage breast cancer diagnosis.
"It is my hope that women across the world can access timely and accurate diagnoses for breast cancer and are provided with the highest quality of care available. As a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons's international committee, I can continue my journey toward expanding breast cancer treatment initiatives,"says Gutnik.
