Earlier this month, the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery honored the five Norman McSwain, M.D., Endowed Fellowship in Trauma Surgery fellows.
At an intimate luncheon at The Club overlooking the Birmingham city skyline, Division Director Jeffrey Kerby, M.D., Ph.D., FACS, gave an overview of Dr. Norman McSwain’s impressive career in the field of trauma medicine.
An Alabama native and UAB alum, McSwain was a trauma surgeon, veteran, professor, EMT, and leader of numerous health care organizations and initiatives. He earned all major trauma awards from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma. He developed Charity Hospital in New Orleans in o an ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center. Taking the principles of ATLS, he created the Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) program, revolutionizing how EMS personnel receive training and provide care. He was also instrumental in brining about standardized hemorrhage control training, or Stop the Bleed, following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
Lauren Tanner, M.D., FACS, Associate Professor and the program director of the Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, introduced each of the fellows and all received their physical award except for Dr. Collom, who couldn’t attend from out of state.
The fellows are:
- 2019: Jonathan Black, M.D., now Assistant Professor in the division
- 2020: Morgan Collom, D.O., now a trauma surgeon at Medical City Plano in Texas
- 2021: Zain Hashmi, M.D., FACS, now Assistant Professor in the division and Associate Principal in the UAB Department of Clinical Practice Transformation
- 2022: Sabrina Goddard, M.D., now Assistant Professor in the division and Assistant Trauma Medical Director
- 2023: Danny Lammers, M.D., current second-year fellow in the division’s Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and active duty Army surgeon
About the Norman McSwain, M.D., Endowed Fellowship in Trauma Surgery
The Norman McSwain, M.D. Endowed Fellowship in Trauma Surgery was started in 2016 after generous donations from faculty, friends, and Heersink School of Medicine alumni from the classes of 1961 through 1965.
This endowment pays tribute to the late Dr. Norman E. McSwain, Jr., for being a pioneer in the field of trauma medicine, helping establish medical service systems on a national and international level, and his passion for service to others.
The endowed fellowship supports the training of outstanding fellows in trauma surgery by enabling UAB’s Department of Surgery to recruit, support, and encourage fellows to train in Alabama. It provides vital support to the training of the next generation of trauma surgeons, and will have an enduring effect o the lives of the patients who benefit from the life-saving skills those specialist learn during their fellowship training and will be of significant and lasting value to UAB and the advancement of trauma surgery.
