From its recent accolade as one of the nation's top culinary destinations to its stunning Appalachian foothills views, Birmingham has earned a reputation as a destination ideal for both work and play.

 The UAB Department of Surgery series, “Loving Life and Work in Birmingham, Alabama,” highlights faculty members who have moved to Birmingham to join our team of surgeons and what they love about the area.

Our second faculty spotlight is Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery Assistant Professor and Co-Director for the Pre-College Research Internship for Students from Minority Backgrounds (PRISM), Andrea Gillis, M.D.

About Dr. Gillis

Dr. Gillis received her medical degree from Columbia University and completed a surgical residency at Albany Medical Center in New York. She then completed an endocrine surgery fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

She is a health outcome disparities and translational science researcher in the field of epigenetics with a focus on examining differences in gene expression in neuroendocrine tumors by race. Dr. Gillis is the recipient of an NIH grant for Early Surgeon Scientists (ESSP) to continue her research.

1. Why did you decide to join the faculty at UAB?

I was attracted to the friendly, energized, and innovative environment.

2. Once you arrived, were there any aspects of being in Alabama that pleasantly surprised you?

The people are so warm and friendly.

3. What’s your favorite thing to do outside of the OR in Birmingham?

I have a dedicated trivia group, and we have a great time dominating across the city!

4. Birmingham is known for its culinary scene. What’s your favorite restaurant in the area?

My favorite restaurant would be a tie between Saw’s or Helen. They each offer something special and unique to Birmingham.
