Medical student Elle Kaplan wins first place in her poster group at Medical Student Research Day on Aug. 7.

Congratulations to UAB medical students Elle Kaplan and Skyler Graham for placing first and third, respectively, in the Surgery and Anesthesiology Poster Session at the Dale J. Benos Medical Student Research Day on Aug. 7. Medical student Brian Stahl also placed second in the Cancer Poster Session.

Kaplan, who was mentored by the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery’s Daniel Chu, M.D., won for her research project, “The Readability of Education Material in Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Programs,” while Graham, who was mentored by the Division of Pediatric Surgery’s Colin Martin, M.D., won for his project, “Utility and Effectiveness of a Novel Institutional Central Line Associated Blood Stream Infection Protocol in a Pediatric Population.” Stahl, who was mentored by the Division of Surgical Oncology's Sushanth Reddy, M.D., won for his research project, "Total Versus Proximal Gastrectomy for Upper Gastric Cancer: A Meta-analysis."

The Dale J. Benos Medical Student Research Day celebrates the research accomplishments of medical students and provides them with the opportunity to present their projects to fellow students and faculty. The day consists of oral and poster presentations by students enrolled in the M.D., M.D/M.P.H, M.D./M.S, M.D/MBA, and M.D./Ph.D. programs.
