The Pediatric Underserved and Global Health (PUGH) Scholars program is a longitudinal opportunity for pediatric residents at UAB to gain experience and focused education in global health during the 3 years of residency training. It consists of Global Health Interest group meetings in addition to gatherings after hours. The Global Health Interest Group meets regularly during the year; these meetings are open to any interested resident.
Our interest group meetings for 2022-2023 included talks from Dr. Priya Prabhakaran on her recent trip to Rwanda, Dr. Rachel Hagues on the impact of hygiene interventions on girls’ education, and the then-PGY2 PUGH Scholars on global dermatology.
In addition, Dr. Alyssa Pfister visited from Burundi and spoke about the realities of practicing in a low resource setting, and Dr. Audrey Lloyd spoke about pediatric TB. We also had a simulation on shock and malnutrition. Our final gathering for the year included a graduation celebration for Dr. Kelsey Thetford, our graduating PUGH Scholar, as well as formal presentations about the two overseas electives that occurred this year.
Our evening activities included a journal club, a social night with Dr Pfister, another gathering to debrief after overseas trips, and the first-year PUGH Scholars participated in Helping Babies Breathe with Dr. Carlo.
In addition, five residents went to Santiago, Chile and one resident went to Kijabe, Kenya on overseas away rotations, with both pre-travel orientation and post-return debriefing.
