Representatives from Adolescent Medicine, Primary Care Clinic, Hospitalist Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Trauma Service, Child Life, ThinkFirst and the Alabama AAP wear green to raise awareness.The inaugural Injury Prevention Awareness Day was a great success! The National Injury Prevention Awareness Day was started this year by the Injury Free Coalition for Kids. As part of the nationwide education awareness day, the Adolescent Clinic, Pediatric Primary Care Clinic and the Emergency Department all participated by wearing green, handing out injury prevention educational materials and providing safety equipment to patient families.

The Pediatric Residency Program also participated with several residents and staff dressing in green. In addition, the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) encouraged pediatric offices across the state to wear green and provide family injury prevention education.

"As pediatricians, it is so important for us to protect children and adolescents," said Kathy Monroe, M.D., professor in the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine who helped organize the department's participation in the day. "Injuries are the leading cause of death for pediatric patients from the age of 1 to 18 years old. Having a day where we are focused on injury prevention helps bring extra attention to the ways we can safeguard our community’s precious children and adolescents!"
