Hope Wilson, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, has been named director of the Pediatric Thrombosis Program. This new role became official as of Feb. 1, 2023. In this capacity, she will continue efforts towards the growth and development of the clinical, research, and educational facets of the program.
Dr. Wilson is a graduate of the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. She went on to complete her pediatric residency and pediatric hematology/oncology fellowship training at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center/Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. During fellowship, she conducted basic/translational research examining the utility of Protein S antibodies in achieving hemostasis in children with Factor IX deficiency.
After completing her fellowship training in 2018, Dr. Wilson was recruited to UAB to establish a pediatric thrombosis clinic and program. This program has grown tremendously since its inception, now caring for over 60 new pediatric VTE diagnoses each year. She developed institutional guidelines to standardize our management of pediatric VTE and is actively working to expand these efforts across several key disciplines.
Additionally, Dr. Wilson serves as chair of the hospital’s VTE-HAC team and is also a member of the Anticoagulation Safety Team. Her clinical research focuses on identifying strategies to improve treatment approaches (i.e., long term anticoagulation use) to reduce recurrences in children who have developed a VTE and have ongoing risk factors for recurrent thrombotic events.
On a national level, Dr. Wilson was selected to participate in the American Society of Hematology’s Clinical Research Training Institute where she learned key clinical research skills and worked with experts in the field to refine her research protocol to study this issue prospectively. At the conclusion of this institute, she was selected, out of 60 potential trainees, to serve a three-year term as Trainee representative on the Executive committee. She continues to grow her national recognition as a leader in pediatric thrombosis as her research was selected for an oral presentation at the 2022 American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting. Finally, Dr. Wilson has a strong commitment education leading several teaching initiatives including monthly CLOT club meetings.
Congratulations Dr. Wilson!
