Susan Walley, M.D., professor in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, received the 2021 Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) Excellence in Clinical Care Award. This award recognizes a pediatric hospitalist who exhibits excellent leadership in the clinical care of pediatric patients. The 2021 PHM awards were presented at the PHM21 Conference held this week from Aug. 4-6.
Dr. Walley is dedicated to improving the care and health of children in Alabama. She is passionate about reducing tobacco smoke exposure and tobacco use in children, especially those with bronchiolitis, asthma and other respiratory illnesses. She serves as the chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Tobacco Control and the medical director of the UAB Tobacco Consult Service. She is nationally recognized in her work in tobacco control and has presented at several national conferences and participated in federal-level advocacy. In the state of Alabama, she has worked tirelessly to reduce tobacco use in children and adolescents and to make UAB and Children’s of Alabama tobacco-free campuses. Additionally, Dr. Walley also serves as the director of quality improvement for the UAB Pediatric Residency Program training future pediatricians in quality improvement and patient safety.
“Providing the best possible clinical care of patients is something I am very passionate about, and I am honored to receive an award in recognition of this work,” said Dr. Walley.
