David Kimberlin, M.D., professor in the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, was named the recipient of the 2022 Walter T. Hughes Distinguished Physician Award. This award is given by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS) to a pediatrician who has made significant contributions to the field of pediatric infectious diseases and is the society’s highest recognition. The award was recently renamed to honor Walter T. Hughes, who was a founding member of PIDS and the first president of the society.

Dr. Kimberlin is honored for his extensive work in the field of pediatric infectious diseases including serving as the PIDS president from 2013-2015, leading the Congenital and Perinatal Infections Collaborative, serving as editor of the Red Book, and publishing numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and medical textbooks.

“I am incredibly honored to receive this award from the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society,” said Dr. Kimberlin. “I have loved working in this field for the past 30 years, and throughout these decades have learned so much from my colleagues in both the clinical and research settings. It is a privilege to collaborate with them in advancing the care of our patients.”
