Ginny Karle, M.D., professor in the Division of Neonatology, has retired after 28 years serving the UAB Department of Pediatrics, Children’s of Alabama and the greater Birmingham community.
Dr. Karle completed her medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia, her pediatric residency training at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and her neonatology fellowship at Children’s National Medical Center. She joined the faculty at UAB in 1993 in the Division of Neonatology.
During her tenure, she served as the associate director of UAB Neonatology Community Programs and as the medical director for several community neonatal intensive care units including St. Vincent’s East (formerly Medical Center East), UAB Medical West Hospital, Princeton Baptist Medical Center, and Shelby Baptist Medical Center. She also served as the vice chair for the Department of Pediatrics at Trinity Medical Center (formerly Montclair Hospital), Princeton Baptist Medical Center, and St. Vincent’s East. Additionally, she also served in leadership positions at Children’s of Alabama including serving on the Medical Peer Review Committee, Clinical Outcomes Committee, and Patient Safety Committee.
“Dr. Karle has been the stabilizing rock in the neonatology community programs as she established relationships with health care leaders in the Birmingham Metropolitan Area,” said Wally Carlo, M.D., co-director of the Division of Neonatology. “In addition, she has been the clinical mentor to all the new neonatologists in our community practice since the 1990s. We are thankful for her outstanding service to the community programs and community neonatologists and her commitment to training the next generation of community neonatologists.”
Dr. Karle’s official date of retirement was April 1, 2021.
