Carlie Stein, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, has recently been named program director for the UAB Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatric Residency Program. Dr. Stein takes over for J.R. Hartig, M.D., associate professor in the Divisions of General Internal Medicine and Academic General Pediatrics, who has served as program director of the residency program for over 15 years.
Prior to becoming program director, Dr. Stein served as the assistant program director for the residency program. She has been in that role since July 2017 and has worked closely with Dr. Hartig and learned about program directorship and medical education.
“I look forward to working with the internal medicine and pediatrics residency programs, department leaders and med-peds faculty to ensure our residents continue to grow and excel as internists and pediatricians and achieve each of their personal and professional goals,” said Dr. Stein. “I am excited to continue to expand opportunities for mentoring, coaching and building curriculum, quality improvement, and advocacy initiatives around healthcare transition through the STEP program.”
In addition to the transition of program director, Channing Garber Brown, M.D., and Brian May, M.D., will become assistant program directors for the residency program, effective July 1, 2021.
Dr. Brown is currently the Med-Peds chief resident and will complete her med-peds residency training in July 2021. Following residency, she will join faculty as an assistant professor in the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics with clinical time at the UAB Leeds Med-Peds Clinic and teaching in the UAB Pediatric Primary Care Clinic.
Dr. May is currently a med-peds hospitalist at UAB and Children’s of Alabama and currently serves as one of the core faculty for the Med-Peds Residency Program.
“We look forward to Drs. Brown and May joining the program leadership and the contributions they will bring to our residents and future growth,” said Dr. Stein.
