Birmingham Teen Health Week promotes healthy behaviors in adolescents and demonstrates the need for supporting and understanding the importance of adolescent health in our communities.
During Birmingham Teen Health Week, March 14-18, 2022, the UAB Leadership Education in Adolescent Health Training project and the Division of Adolescent Medicine hosted a series of workshops that were youth-led and supported by community stakeholders.
Birmingham Teen Health Week partners included the Birmingham Coalition for Student Mental Health, The Birmingham Education Foundation, Girls Inc of Central Alabama, UAB Medicine and other community organizations
The themes for 2022 were health equity, transition after high school, and mental health. Activities included a Health Equity Grand Rounds and Clinical Simulations led by the Pediatric Simulation Center for Birmingham City Schools Health Science Academy students, and a virtual bullet journaling session focused on mental health. Adolescent health high school interns, Jessica Cruz and Jalyn Andrews surveyed local teens and then led a "Teens Speak" virtual session.
