Members of the UAB Department of Pathology gathered for an outgoing reception for residents and fellows on May 31. Faculty, staff and trainees came together to celebrate at the Fennec with dinner and an awards ceremony.

Bruce Alexander Endowed ProfessorOn May 30, the UAB Department of Pathology hosted the seventh annual C. Bruce Alexander Lecture in Pathology Education featuring Sarah M. Bean, M.D., FCAP, Professor, Department of Pathology, Duke University School of Medicine. Bean delivered the talk, titled, "Just Okay is Not Okay! Giving and Receiving Feedback Effectively."

This lecture honors Dr. C. Bruce Alexander for his many years of service to UAB Pathology's teaching mission. 

May is Brain Tumor Awareness Month (BTAM), a time to raise awareness about brain tumors and educate the community. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), about 25,000 people are diagnosed with central nervous system (CNS) tumors each year in the United States. CNS tumors collectively refer to all brain and spine tumors, of which there are more than 130 different types. 

C. Ryan Miller, M.D., Ph.D., Vishnu B. Reddy Translational Research Endowed Professor and Director of the UAB Department of Pathology’s Division of Neuropathology, describes the goal of his team's brain tumor research below.

Fatima Igdoura, Program Manager I in the UAB Department of Pathology Chair's Office, has been elected to serve as Representative for UAB Staff Council. Igdoura will serve a two-year term, August 2024 through July 2026.

Santhosh Kumar Karthikeyan, graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in cancer biology in the lab of Sooryanarayana Varambally, Ph.D., Professor, Molecular and Cellular Pathology, was selected as first-place winner of the Midsouth Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Society’s (MCBIOS) 2024 Young Scientist Excellence Award.

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Michael Conner, M.D. Dr. Conner was a professor emeritus in the Division of Anatomic Pathology.

The UAB Department of Pathology celebrated the 29th year of its Paulette Shirey Pritchett Endowed Lecture in Pathology on May 16 with an outstanding lecture by Vishva M. Dixit, M.D., Vice President, Early Discovery Research, Genentech, Director, Genentech Postdoctoral Program. Dixit delivered the talk, titled, "Why So Many Ways to Die?"

On May 6, 2024, the Department of Pathology welcomes a new faculty member to the Division of Neuropathology, led by C. Ryan Miller, M.D., Ph.D.

Christina Appin, M.D., joins the department as assistant professor, Neuropathology. Dr. Appin joins us from her most recent role as a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of California at San Francisco, in the lab of Joseph Costello, Ph.D. Prior to this she was an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.

The 2024 Tri-State Pathology Conference took place April 27-28 at the Gulf Hills Hotel & Resort in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, bringing together the Alabama Association of Pathologists, the Louisiana Association of Pathologists, and the Mississippi Association of Pathologists for a stellar lineup of presentations.

Ananya Deshpande, an undergraduate student in the lab of Elizabeth Brown, Ph.D., MPH, Endowed Professor of Cancer Pathobiology and Associate Director for Population Science, O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, is a recipient of this year's UAB Honors College Presidential Honors Fellowship. 

"The Presidential Honors Fellowship will allow me to deepen my knowledge of myeloma and hopefully improve patient outcomes, and I am so honored to receive this incredible fellowship," Deshpande says.

The UAB Department of Pathology hosted its second annual Staff Retreat on Administrative Professionals Day 2024. The retreat featured wonderful speakers, food and camaraderie.

UAB Pathology Resident Mishi Bhushan, M.D., M.P.H., PGY3, learned recently that she scored among the highest in the nation of the Resident In-Service Examination, or RISE. Bhushan scored in the greater than 99th percentile on the Clinical Pathology component of the exam as compared to other PGY3s nationally taking the test. 

Gene Siegal, M.D., Ph.D., Robert M. Mowry Endowed Professor, Executive Vice-Chair, was honored by the Medical Association of the State of Alabama for his 50 years in medical practice with public recognition and awarding of a commemorative pin.

Elizabeth Brown, Ph.D., M.P.H., Endowed Professor of Cancer Pathobiology, Division of Molecular and Cellular Pathology, Associate Director for Population Science, O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, is a recipient of this year's 2024 Graduate Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentorship.

Two UAB Pathology faculty members' proposals were selected for faculty development grants by the Provost and Faculty Senate in the 2024-25 cycle. Andrea Comba, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Neuropathology, and Liyun Cao, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Laboratory Medicine.

Comba's project, "Unraveling mesenchymal transformation in glioma through spatial transcriptomics,” has been funded for $10,000, with funding split between the Office of the Provost and the Heersink School of Medicine. 

Cao's project, “Development of a machine learning algorithm to predict free valproic acid concentration in adult epileptic patients,” has been funded for $10,000.

A case submitted to the journal Gastro Hep Advances by Goo Lee, M.D. Ph.D., Associate Professor, Anatomic Pathology, was published in the April issue as an, "Image of the Month." The case, titled, "Tuberculous Colitis Accompanied By a Large Colonic Mass," is featured online.

"Tuberculous colitis belongs to a form of inflammatory/infectious intestinal disorder caused by Mycobacterium species," Lee explains.

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, an opportunity to learn about alcohol use disorder (AUD) and the adverse impact of alcohol misuse on health and society. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAA), researchers estimate that each year there are more than 178,000 alcohol-related deaths, making alcohol a leading preventable cause of death in the United States. 

On Wednesday, April 17, the Heersink School of Medicine hosted a reception for individuals who have received endowment awards in the past year. UAB Department of Pathology had three faculty members recognized at the event: Alexander “Craig Mackinnon Jr.” – Robert B. Adams Endowed Professorship in Pathology; Rakesh Patel – Victor Darley-Usmar Endowed Professorship in Molecular Pathology; Casey Weaver – Leonard H. Robinson Endowed Chair in Pathology.

This year April 14-20 is Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, an annual celebration of medical laboratory professionals and pathologists who play a vital role in health care and patient advocacy led by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. This week’s theme is Barbie: The Lab is Everything.
