The Department of Pathology is pleased to announce a new faculty member joining our team August 1. Darin Trelka, M.D., Ph.D., joins the Division of Anatomic Pathology, led by Interim Director Thomas Winokur, M.D., as an associate professor.
Trelka joins the department from the Broward County Medical Examiner and Trauma Services Division in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he served as Associate Medical Examiner. Trelka earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania-Hahnemann University and his Ph.D. in Anatomy, Pathology and Cell Biology from Thomas Jefferson University, both in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Trelka completed his Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and his fellowship in Forensic Pathology at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College of Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. He served as a local medical examiner in Richmond, Virginia, for Richmond City, Henrico, Hanover, Chesterfield, Albemarle, Greene and Nelson Counties before serving as the Deputy Coroner and Forensic Pathologist in Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office in Cleveland, Ohio.
In 2009, Trelka transferred to Fort Lauderdale, where he joins us from. There, he served as Associate Medical Examiner, Acting Medical Examiner for the U.S. Virgin Islands, Interim District Chief Medical Examiner, Deputy Chief Medical Examiner and Director of Trelka Forensic and Medicolegal Services.
Trelka is no stranger to academic appointments. He served as Assistant Professor of Pathology and Director of Anatomical Programs at Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine in Boca Raton, Florida and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery’s Division of Pathology at Nova Southeatern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. There, Trelka was also the Forensic Pathology Fellowship Program Director. He is the recipient of Florida Atlantic University’s Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award.
