Overview
Pulmonary Pathology and Dermatopathology is a section that provides comprehensive lung, mediastinum and skin diagnostic services to UAB Hospital, Callahan Eye Hospital, Medical West, and O’Neill Comprehensive Cancer Center. It also provides consultative services to our UAB pathology outreach services (CPPP), Children's of Alabama, Birmingham VA Medical Center and other local and regional institutions. The Surgical Pathology Laboratory within the Division of Anatomic Pathology at UAB processes approximately 50,000 surgical cases per year, of which approximately 1,000 are pulmonary, mediastinal and pleura specimens and 1,000 are skin resections.
The divisions of Surgical Oncology and Thoracic Surgery within the UAB Heersink School of Medicine are the primary sources of in-house material. Faculty within the Dermatopathology section participate in lung cancer and interstitial lung disease working conferences and tumor boards as well as multidisciplinary tumor boards, and provide daily "at the scope" teaching as well as didactic lectures and slide sessions to pathology residents and surgical pathology fellows. Section faculty also collaborate with intramural and extramural research teams studying diseases of the lung and skin, in addition to their own research projects.

Pulmonary / Dermatopathology Consultation and Tests
Our Pulmonary and Dermatopathology team provides comprehensive expert consultative service for pathology related to any subsite in the thoracic cavity and related disease conditions. Skin consultations emphasize tumors. A comprehensive immunohistochemical panel as well as FISH testing and multigene NGS panels through our Genomics Division are available for case workup.
