Overview

Cardiovascular is a section within the Division of Anatomic Pathology at UAB that provides comprehensive cardiovascular diagnostic services to UAB hospital. We also provide consultative services to Children’s of Alabama, UAB Pathology Outreach Services (Community Pathology Practice Program), Birmingham VA Medical Center and other local and regional institutions.  The Surgical Pathology Laboratory within the Division of Anatomic Pathology processes approximately 50,000 surgical cases per year, of which approximately 1,500 are cardiac biopsies and cardiovascular surgical specimens.

The Heart Failure/Transplant Sections of Cardiology at UAB and Children’s of Alabama are the primary source of heart biopsies, and the Cardiovascular Surgery Division is the main source of cardiovascular surgical specimens. Heart biopsies that arrive before noon to the Histology laboratory are read by our team the same day.

Our faculty is actively involved in the Cardiovascular Surgery and Cardiology M&M monthly conferences. Cardiovascular surgeons frequently come to our surgical pathology or Autopsy suite to review specimens. Section faculty is also involved in teaching heart transplant histopathology to pathology and heart failure fellows, and collaborate with intramural and extramural research teams studying basic, transitional and clinical diseases of the cardiovascular system.
