Explore UAB

Our program not only seeks to foster an educational atmosphere both in and out of the hospital, but also emphasizes the cultivation of lasting relationships amongst the faculty and residents.

Friday Night Lights

During the fall, residents can volunteer as sideline physicians for middle and high school football games. Residents work in tandem with athletic trainers to cover approximately 10 Birmingham area football teams each season. This opportunity offers residents invaluable exposure to the identification and management of acute sports related injuries.

resident life3Conferences, Courses, and Meetings

Residents are encouraged to present research at annual conferences and attend surgical techniques courses. Each year the department supports a trip for PGY-2 residents to attend the AO Trauma Basic Principles of Fracture Management course and PGY-5 residents to attend the AAOS Annual Meeting.

resident life2Alabama Orthopedic Classic

Every summer, an annual golf tournament is held to benefit the Kurt M. W. Niemann Foundation, which was established to help provide for the educational needs of orthopedic resident education at UAB in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. Kurt M. W. Niemann, former Division Director of Orthopedic Surgery at UAB. Faculty, residents, alumni, and family of all golfing levels enjoy an 18-hole round with multiple contests and prizes throughout.

Resident camaraderie is a focal point and strength of our program. Both department and resident organized outings and events are planned throughout the year, taking advantage of Birmingham’s burgeoning urban renewal which has filled the city with sporting events, concerts, breweries, and restaurants.
