Grand Rounds is a series of educational presentations held on Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. via Zoom. Attendance is mandatory.
Morbidity & Mortality
M&M Conference is held once a month on a Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. via Zoom. Attendance is mandatory. These are closed conferences only offered to the residents, faculty, and affiliate faculty.
Didactic Conferences
These conferences occur each Thursday between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm in the Orthopaedic Specialties Building. All residents are excused from clinical duties during this time unless attending to an emergency.
Orthopaedic In-Training Exam
All residents take the OITE each year during training. The program provides each resident with a subscription to the Orthobullets 365 OITE study plan.
Research
Each PGY-5 resident presents an original research project during the Annual Residents’ Research Day. Residents are also encouraged to submit a presentation to a national or regional orthopaedic conference such as the AAOS, MAOA or Alabama Orthopaedic Society. Each PGY-1 resident participates in the PGY-1 Research Symposium.
Surgical Skills Boot Camp
PGY-1s also participate in a surgical skills rotation. The curriculum includes orientation materials, hand-off training, suturing, bone handling and soft tissue handling skills, arthroscopy, joint arthroplasty, trauma skills (halo application, traction pins, joint reductions/aspiration, splinting/casting), spine techniques, and others.
UAB Medicine Mini-Quality Academy
UAB prides itself on training and investing in future leaders. Through the UAB Medicine Mini-Quality Academy, residents have the opportunity to learn skills and gain knowledge that sets a foundation for creating innovation and improvements in healthcare delivery at the point of care.
