This two-year fellowship is designed to prepare academic specialists in general obstetrics and gynecology to pursue a research career in an academic department focusing on global and rural women’s health.   As a part of the program, fellows will spend 50-60% of their time conducting research in a low- and middle-income country, and have the opportunity to engage in research focusing on rural women’s health in the US and to complete a Master’s program curriculum:

• Masters of Science in Global Health, a new true transdisciplinary curriculum jointly offered by the new Mary Heersink Institute of Global Health (in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine) in collaboration with the UAB Sparkman Center for Global Health and a global consortium.
• Master’s in Public Health (MPH) with concentration options of epidemiology, health behavior, health care organization, health policy, maternal and child health policy and leadership, and population health.
• Masters of Science in Public Health with concentrations in applied technology, biostatistics, epidemiology, and outcomes research.

The fellowship program will allow investigation in a broad range of areas including but not limited by behavioral, epidemiologic, implementation science, health services, outcomes, and patient-oriented research. The Department has an emphasis on global and rural health, gynecology oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility services, urogynecology and pelvic reconstructive surgery, and women’s reproductive healthcare infectious diseases. Given its breadth we are able to tailor the fellowship to a research topic that matches the candidate’s interest. The goal of this fellowship is for our fellows to finish the program with a strong foundation in the design and conduct of clinical and/or population science research, grant writing, a track record of research success, and a network of mentors and resources that will allow them to be well-positioned to obtain extra-mural funding and launch an academic career. Research infrastructure and collaboration through the Center for Women’s Reproductive Health and other university-wide interdisciplinary centers at UAB are among the best in the country.
